I originally owned a Microsoft Lifecam VX-3000 as my 2nd real webcam ever, but 3rd technically. It was alright, but the audio was horrible, so that forced me to get a new microphone because the built-in microphone was terrible. I have probably never seen a Webcam with excellent audio, quality, video effects, and more. This item is truly incredible.

Let me just start with the quality. The quality of the webcam is just wonderful. Rightlight technology enables the webcam to not tolerate the darkness, and show perfect light anywhere I am. In fact, when the house is almost completely dark except for a small amount of light that I can't see, I look on my screen and I see a fully detailed me. Although, it's not as if it's so clear that it's not noticeable that I'm in the dark, it's still very neat. There's a very nice light (no light shines from the webcam incase you're thinking that) that works well in all area.

The audio, or I should say microphone is very excellent. I'm always a little scared that the microphone will go "bye-bye" because it's so excellent. I don't want to lose it. I can talk as low as I possibly can and the microphone detects me. Also, the noise-cancelling is great. Actually, I do hear some of my dad's tv in the background, but that's because it's so loud that NASA can hear it. Not really, but it's quite loud. But, the sound from my dad's tv sounds low enough in the background to give it a smooth balance.

I have tried using the "my sounds" settings in the control panel to make the headset work after the camera software is installed but no combination will allow me to do what will make the headset work again

I work in a space where headsets must be used. I have the Microsoft Livechat 3000 headset which has worked perfectly. I do not want to use the microphone feature of the 9000 nor can I use my PC speakers for other than normal alerts. Is there a way to make the camera work and keep the existing headset configuration? No!

This is what we did. After getting slightly suspicious on our kid's nanny irratic behavior, we wanted to monitor her activity while we were out. This was the best device. Setup was Easy. I setup to record the HD Video from Webcam on the hardisk. I had to cover the front of the webcam with small plastic as it glows red light when recording. I did not not want anyone to notice that.

I was amazed by the microphone sensitivity on this device. I could listen to our nanny talking from even 20 feet away. Also could listen our infant crying from even farther distance.

The low light visibility of this camera was AMAZING!! It lit up the picture very well with "Perfect Light 2". We loved the crstal clear video. Also the Video was extra wide and covers larger area than most webcams.

From what we saw (and heard) astornished us. He caught her (on camera) mistreating our baby and stealing stuff from our home!! Everything had voice recorded with clarity. When we asked her she lied/denied everything. We threw out the nanny immediately and she had no clue what had hit her.

I had an early model camera. Not sure what or how old, but it was for a Win98 system to give you an idea. Any movement was jerky, full of ghosts/trailers. It looked like I had a dozen or so of me following me around. With all the advances and talk of making web videos so easy (Youtube, etc), I was expecting close to what I was getting from a regular camcorder. I was disappointed. Though better than my antique camera, I was still following myself around - ghosts/trailers. The manual was of little help. I found no mention of this issue. There was also very little info in the manual of what the detail settings would have an effect on. The descriptions were along the lines of "XYZ Adjuster - this adjusts the XYZ". For a person like myself with limited knowledge of the subject, it was not very helpful.
I did find a fix of sorts on the web. By turning off the low light enhancement feature (I think they call it RightLight), the video was much improved. But it needs fairly bright light to work in this mode. I can't tell you how this compares to other cameras out there today. Rather I utilized the camera as a workhorse in a scientific research laboratory, collecting time-lapse images of biological samples. What makes this particular application tricky is that I wished to image the samples under a background of dim infrared light. Older versions of the QuickCam were incompatible with such an application unless a small infrared-blockinglens was first removed (something that was not trivial). To my pleasant surprise the Pro 9000 is sufficiently IR senstive to be tested for my application. In fact the Pro 9000 performed with flying colors, delivering very high quality images of high resolution, capable of detailed subsequent digital analysis. The optics on this camera are of the highest quality for such a small unit - Zeiss was the way to go!

I used to not care much about Logitech - since I'd associated them with the cheaper type of keyboards and a 3 button clumsy mouse that I could not care for. I guess the company has really turned around and is bringing into the market great products at reasonable prices. Now when I see "Logitech" - I'm reasonably confident that I'll find something I like.

I have a wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse (works flawlessly) and a speaker/subwoofer set - that also work rather well.

This webcam though has exceeded expectations when used with Skype and a high power computer. Skype automatically detected that I have a "high quality webcam" and set me up for "high resolution" video.

Costs less than what my CS330 Intel webcam did (and which I used all these years - since no other webcam quite gave me the same level of performance - a creative VGA webcam I tried gave me skin color that was dyed pink - awful).

Until now that is -

Whats to like -
1) Great image quality (good color, contrast, brightness). Its basically like a decent quality 2 MP camera. The color is a bit washed out at the default setting, but the saturation levels can easily be adjusted.
2) Has a mic that is extremely high quality and very sensitive. If a sound can be heared at its microphone - it will be transmitted to Skype with full fidelity. We are always being surprised by what the other parties are able to hear - like a baby sucking on the bottle - even though the baby is many feet away.
3) I don't know about "RightLight" but I do have to do manual adjustments to brightness/contrast..
4) Captures video directly into WMV - if you need to. Video quality is quite good actually. Probably better than an SD camcorder.
5) Autofocus seems to work well.
6) I loaded the latest software/driver from Logitech site - clear instructions and everything worked first time around - no issues at all. You do need the software+drivers to make full use of the product.
7) Lens is much wider angle than my earlier webcam. Make a big difference.
8) Echo cancellation is perfect (Apparently Logitech software also has some kind of Echo Cancellation built in).
9) Used with Skype - we've had no problems with high resolution video half way around the world and we don't even notice a lag.

Flaws and negatives -

1)The stand is flimsy. Unit topples over easily if kept on a table. I'll be modding the stand a little bit with a "heavy" weight.

2) If you place the camera alone on the table, the perspective is tilted because the mic end is lower than the camera end. Camera cannot rest horizontally. I'll be sticking some foam to the Mic end of the camera to make it rest horizontally instead of giving grandparents a tilted view of our home. I need to make the camera rest on a table sometimes - because of the stand issue (point 1 above).

3) Loading just the driver (sans software) - there weren't any options for camera adjustments.

4) Logitech webcam software installs itself as a startup. This is un-necessary and I'll now have to "disable" this rotten feature by wading through the registry. Why does software not give me the option of whether it should run anytime the computer is started? One star taken away for this issue!

Inspite of the minor flaws - product exceeded expectations. I'd have bought this earlier if I'd known about it!!

(Update - I just obtained another webcam - a refurbished logitech messenger - this qualifies as the worst product purchased in 2008! The CD supplied with the product had the wrong software version, the logitech website gave me incompatible driver/software and finally a 3rd party site suggested by a forum gave me the correct drivers ).

When I first purchased the camera I had Vista Home Edition on my laptop and it worked fine. Although I had to go through several installs to get it all working, it did work well once the installation finished. One thing that was a problem was the microphone settings defaulted to something other than the Logitech 9000, which caused it to fail. The dialog box that appears (automatically when installation is near finished) to set the environment up should pick itself as the default, but that was not the case, thus the microphone would not work. Be sure to check this out if it happens to you and select the Logitech 9000.

I upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit as I really wanted the BitLocker feature since I travel with the laptop and am concerned with data theft should I lose the laptop. The Logitech WebCam software will not install completely and hangs. A reboot does not fix it. I even tried running it with Administrative privilege and XP compatibility mode. I removed and reinstalled it many times to no avail. I finally removed the WebCam software, but left all the drivers installed. I researched the Internet, but could not find anything specific to this issue. Having removed the WebCam software Skype and other programs were able to use both the camera and all its features (face tracking, zoom, etc.) including the microphone. What I am missing, and can quite frankly do without, are the Avitars, Quick Snap pictures, etc.. It would be nice to have as my granddaughter was quite amused by them.

All in all, I think it is a good setup and would buy it again. Hopefully Logitech will update their program for use with Vista Ultimate.

Although MacOS is not supported by the manufacturer, I had absolutely no problems using this camera with Skype on Mac OS 10.4. Just plug it in and ignore the CD that comes with it. The quality of the picture is really nice, and the sound is clear. Only if you hold something very close (less than 4 inches) to the camera the image gets blurred.
