Video transcript: This is a Mac only review; I'm running the webcam on a Macbook with OS 10.5.2. My reason for buying the webcam was convenience: my desk setup involves the laptop itself being hooked to an external monitor and in a drawer out of sight. The fewer the wires, the better.

I wanted to use the webcam for video recording and livestreaming, chatting too. As far as Ustream.tv goes, working with over-the-web video, I think this cam is ideal. I had no problems with it. Most of the time internet video doesn't have the best frame rate anyway, and this one really delivered. The camera itself is capable of HD and has a really nice sound quality. I debated picking up a USB mic, but didn't, because this webcam has everything I need as far as a mic goes built in.

The "cool" factor of the webcam: I spent a few days looking for just the right one, and this is the coolest looking webcam I found. It sits very solid on top of the monitor but is still easy to move around, if you need to.

Now, desktop applications: I tested it out (and wanted to get it to work in) Photo Booth, iMovie, and Quicktime Pro.

I'm able to gather that the hardware is both Mac and PC compatible, while the software that comes with the camera is PC only. The end result of this is that the camera the Mac user has has no preferences or control for the hardware. Zooming, quality control, etc. isn't controllable.

Photo Booth: taking still shots looked great. Video recording had a terrible frame rate. Audio was great, but frame rate was unacceptable.

iMovie: turns out (as far as I can find out) that in order to use an external camera (vs. the iSight) the connection must be Firewire. This camera's connection is USB. Using this webcam isn't an option, within iMovie itself. Keep in mind that you can record with Photo Booth and then import it to iMovie. But, of course, the frame rate of Photo Booth videos isn't any good.

Quicktime Pro: Although it costs $[...] to purchase, Quicktime does a bit of a better job recording video on this webcam. I still don't like the frame rate. Despite Quicktime claiming that it is recording at a 30fps, there's no way that's actually what it is. Again, this goes back to the inability of the hardware of the webcam to be controlled by the Mac.

Overall, I'd say this is great for the online video streaming/chatting I want to use it for, mainly. But don't pick this one up if you want to use it for high quality video. It is not comparable to the iSight when it comes to the video.

Did not really understand in my research, or care, about the avatars and other special graphic effects, but in fact those have been very fun and everyone has enjoyed them immensely. I just purchased the QuickCam Pro 9000 for my girlfriend since our only communication for the next year will be via iChat. I tested the camera on three different Macs (iBook G4 running 10.4.11, a Mac Mini running 10.4.11, and a MacBook Pro running 10.5.1) and I had the same results with all of the computers. This camera quality looks good until you begin to make any movements. The framerate is HORRIBLE!

Although this camera is advertised with a framerate up to 30/second, you cannot achieve this without the logitech drivers and you cannot install any of the camera's software unless you own a PC. There is absolutely no installation software on the camera's installation disc. "Plug it in and deal with it," is probably the attitude towards Mac users of the Logitech developers. The quality reminds me of the webcams from ten years ago that had a framerate of up to 5 f/s. The only difference is the resolution.

The MacBook Pro I tested the QuickCam Pro 9000 on has a built-in iSight camera, but I wanted to see if the newer operating system would help matters any. It doesn't. I bought this webcam in December and although it is clear from the start you have a much sharper image then your friends webcams, only after several months I realize HOW good the picture is in low light conditions.
While other webcams (including cheaper Logitech ones) give you grain, noise and wrong colors in dim light, the Quickcam Pro 9000 is almost as good as in daylight.

I found the holding "clip" a little awkward at first, but it does its job.

Works perfectly with Windows XP and Skype 3.8.0.115 (and the previous Skype version as well).
Note that I didn't bother with the software CD contents but downloaded the newest Logitech Quickcam 11.50 software from their website right away. Make sure the "Cancel echo" option is turned on for best audio quality.

(I still haven't tried it with Windows 2000, it seems you can only use the version 11.00 Logitech software as it is the last one officially supporting W2k...)

I have always loved Logitech during my many years as a PC/Windows user.
However, after switching to a Mac well over a year ago I discovered
that Logitech not only wasn't a "mac friendly" company but they had
no aspiration to be one despite the many complaints.

My case in point involves the Quickcam Pro 9000

It took a long time for me to find a Logitech webcam that would work
under Mac OS X. About a year ago I bought the Logitech Ultravision
webcam which, though not at first advertised to do so, was the very
first webcam that could be used with OS X right out of the box with
no drivers.

It's a great webcam despite the fact it does poorly in low light.

So, I see that Logitech releases the Quickcam Pro 9000 and by all rights,
it is the same compliant webcam as the Ultravision. After all, right
out of the box it does work with Max OS X with iChat.

No doubt, the Quickcam 9000 is miles ahead of the Logitech Ultravision,
I was amazed by how crisp the image quality was in iChat even under low light.
This camera outperforms any webcam I have ever seen before it.

....but here's the problem....the frame rate is abysmal. I would say
this thing is working on 5fps and doesn't get any better. Stupid me
for buying this webcam without fully checking all the reviews. Now I
find that the problem concerning the frame rate was reported to Logitech
months ago and as usual, there's no fix.

I ask this seriously as a long-time user of Logitech products....

Why does Logitech hate Mac users?

There are very little products the company puts out that are Mac
compliant, including their latest and greatest hardware releases. Only
a few keyboards support mac. You won't find a Mac keyboard in their
diNovo line. Their webcams don't come with OS X drivers.

I can almost guarantee you that Logitech will not have a driver for
the Quickcam 9000 under Leopard despite the many complaints posted here
and across the Internet.

I just want to warn Amazon shoppers that the Quickcam 9000 has frame rate
issues under Leopard. Do a GOOGLE search and you will easily find enough complaints
to substantiate this claim.

If you want a webcam that works great under Mac, try their UltraVision webcams that
came out a year or two ago. They work right out of the box with no drivers. The image

This may be one of the best current (5/08) webcams at the time of writing this, for the money.

First - the Zeiss glass cant be beat. Photographers will know that this is a top-notch glass, and a real surprise for me to find it available on a webcam rather than DSLR lens.

Second - Living in a dark brownstone (Brooklyn), this webcam makes it look like we're in a brightly lit room, accurately bringing out detail and shadow without too much contrast. The auto white balancing is also quite accurate, whether indoors in our reds/yellows/browns apartment with incandescent or flourescent lighting, or in the garden of greens and sunshine.

Third - the microphone quality was good enough that I threw out my headset based on what my callers were hearing. Even across the room, they commented that the cam's microphone was just fine, and no headset was needed.

The options you could throw away on this are the silly little overlays and cartoons (good for kids), and the tracking option. Just not accurate or smart enough to be useful.

You have to hand it to Logitech, the image quality is really, really good on this webcam... but here's my advice for road warriors: don't buy it.

My company bought 27 of these babies Feb 1 for us road warriors. For presentations and video conferencing on the go, as they say.

Verdict: after 20 days, 17 of them were broken. Why? The stupid balancing thing in the back either snapped off or broke in half in briefcases. And once that's gone, your logitech is worthless.
Other minus: the video looks great, but when you use Hotel connections with it, it's very, very choppy. So don't charge $90 to your company for something they'll have to replace quickly and you can't put in a briefcase.

I was expecting a good camara based on the price. However i have run into several problems with it.

First the Software would not install. It would stop mid way on instalation. After several trys i finally went to there website to see if it was something with the cd. When i downloaded there software trough there web site it worked for my Windows xp pc.
Secondly if you move around to quickly the video becomes blurry. There is a feature in the logitech software for motion compensation but it's only for a limited time and you can't record during that time.

I recomend you purchased something more inexpensive and worth it's price.

OK, plug & play with NO conflicts using Windows XP. Now lets talk Windows Vista Home Premium....Or maybe we should NOT? Which conflict to begin with. Let me just take 45 days of fighting this thing down to the bottom lines. EVERY consumer will have a different problem or solution or success/failure. Why? Simple, everyone has their computer set up with different configurations & hardware etc.
MY long story short, if on a chat site like say VideoFrog, all I had to do to cause a complete FREEZE of not only my cam but my entire system (requiring me to literally UNPLUG THE COMPUTER!), was to simply plug my cam into any USB port. Can you imagine the frustration? Customer support (at MY expense on long phone calls) were in every single case, never resolved. EVERY phone call was going to be returned. How many were? NONE!!!!!!!!! Logitech has become a company of ghosts. Sad because they always treated me so well in past years.
How did I finally resolve MY problem? I had to disconnect my Buffalo Wireless Network Router. That is all I needed to do. Go figure. Almost 2 months of being run around in circles. Best of luck to those who like ME, assumed everyone with any config problems was just an idiot...
So how does this thing work IF you get it to work? Steller except you need to keep your sound turned WAY down on your mic or you will broadcast the most revolting over modulation you can imagine! Picture? Amazing.
